New housing district receives innovative heating grid

Industry News – August 12, 2021

The new Buckower Felder district receives an innovative heating network. Energy service provider Energielenker formed part of the planning team.

With a carbon neutral heating supply system, use of innovative technologies and a high energy efficiency in buildings, the housing development project Buckower Felder has been awarded a climate conservation prize by the "Klimaschutzpartner Berlin" alliance. The housing construction company Stadt und Land and the Berlin municipal utilities joined forces with renewable energy service provider Energielenker to plan the efficient fourth generation heating network for 900 rental apartments.

The heating grid runs at a lower temperature than conventional heating networks while integrating a high proportion of renewable sources of energy. Wastewater heat recovery is the core element of this process. In total, the energy service provider, with headquarters in Münster, designed five distribution points made up of electric heating pumps and a redundant boiler system. Each boiler has 200–300 kW capacity. The Berlin municipal utilities are building a 900 kW wastewater heat transfer for waste heat supply. Photovoltaic installations on around 40% of roof area supply the housing development with an environmentally friendly source of electricity. The efficient heating network (heating grid 4.0) is subsidized by the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA).

The sustainable district is due to be completed by the end of 2024. Alongside a climate-friendly energy supply, the planners put a focus on a modern mobility concept that promotes e-mobility. A mobility station with environmentally-friendly transportation options is to be included as one of the services available to residents.
