Future Grid & PV Power Plants

Jun/08/2021 - 11:30 am

ICM München, Room 13 B

The number of PV power plants is rising rapidly. If they are to be effectively integrated in our energy system, power grids need to adapt. The rise of PV power plants, often relatively small in scale, increases the distribution of energy generation. Meanwhile, the weather-dependent nature of solar power makes accurate forecasting essential - in terms of weather and climate but also energy generation and demand. In this session speakers will discuss how renewable energy generation and grid operation can be aligned to function as a single reliable and resilient system.

Session

Energy Storage as Grid Stabilizer

Jun/08/2021 - 02:30 pm

ICM München, Room 13 B

Utility-scale storage will be essential if intermittent renewable energy supplies are to reliably fulfil consumer demand and turn decentralized renewable energy generation into a mainstream reality. It can provide an instant boost to network capacity to alleviate grid congestion and offers a cost-effective alternative to expanding transmission and distribution systems. This session will examine the implications of large-scale storage for other elements of the energy system and discuss how such facilities can be implemented most effectively in practice.

Session

How to Use EV-flexibility to Ensure System Reliability

Jun/08/2021 - 04:30 pm

ICM München, Room 13 B

Electric cars boomed in 2020, with several European countries announcing plans to ban the sale of new ICE-powered vehicles. EU estimates suggest the number of EVs across the continent could reach 190m by 2050. This will require suitable load management strategies but also offers the potential to cut costs and CO2 emissions arising from power generation, such as through bidirectional V2G connections. In this session, speakers will examine the state of affairs in several European countries, discuss a series of practical cases, and analyze the scale of the challenges ahead for the energy sector.
