A Holistic View of the Energy Transition

Expert Interview – May 23, 2023

Christian Schorn, Director of Asset Operations at TransnetBW GmbH, is the Committee Chairman of the EM-Power Europe Conference.

Mr. Schorn, how do you expect the European energy system to change over the next ten years?

There’s going to be an enormous deployment of power generating systems based on renewable energies. At the same time, grid operators will have to massively expand their power grids and until then, manage the connection of new capacity, which represents a serious challenge to everyone involved.

How will the EM-Power Europe Conference cover this wide range of topics?

Each of the six conference sessions focuses on a different topic, shedding light on various aspects of said challenges, which will be discussed by key stakeholders from all across Europe. The discussions will feature possible technical and strategic solutions.

What are the highlights of the conference?

The European Commission’s current stance towards the energy policy is among the main highlights. Beyond that, operators of distribution grids and transportation networks will be discussing how a possible system could be developed. And of course, topics affecting the industry and associations across Europe will also be discussed.

Why is a visit definitely worth it?

The EM-Power Europe Conference brings all perspectives and stakeholders of the European electrical energy world together in one place, providing a glimpse outside the box and a holistic view of the development needed to make the energy transition successful.

What are the target groups of the conference?

The conference is particularly tailored to anyone involved in power grid development, grid connection and the interaction between all relevant stakeholders – from grid operators to energy managers and developers of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.

Who’s going to be there?

Many important associations and large companies have been involved in planning the conference program, with E.DSO, IRENA, Accenture, GEODE, Eurelectric and T&D Europe as Session Partners. Other associations and high-ranking representatives of the European Commission are going to be there as well.

EM-Power Europe Conference

The EM-Power Europe Conference has six sessions in store for you that provide insights into the challenges and solutions of a successful energy transition:

  • Keynote session: How to Speed Up the Energy Transition
  • Innovation, New Market Designs and Flexibility Needs to Integrate Large-Scale Renewables
  • The Power of Digitalisation to Address System Efficiency and Net Zero Grid
  • Distributed Energy Resources & Consumer Empowering
  • Electrify Now: End-Use Sector Coupling as a Decarbonisation Speedway
  • Resources of Speed – Elements of Accelerating the Energy Transition

You will have even more networking opportunities at the Summer BBQ on the evening of the first conference day. You can look forward to barbecued food, cold drinks, relaxed conversations and a couple of surprises!

"In the photovoltaic sector, the shortage of skilled workers at the level of electricians is estimated at around 60 to 100,000 people"

September 01, 2023

The shortage of electricians, air-conditioning technicians and IT specialists could put the brakes on the energy transition in Germany, because there is currently a shortage of around 216,000 skilled workers for the expansion of solar and wind energy. What opportunities are there in terms of training and continuing education? And what about the financing of training?
