A new approach has made it possible to determine a specific carbon footprint for all manufactured products in real time, essentially as a by-product of an expanded and digitalized energy management system.
The innovative method is the result of the project CO2Realtime, initiated by Ökotec Energiemanagement in cooperation with aluminum manufacturer Hydro three years ago with the goal of examining the manufacture of packaging foil more closely. co2online is the communication partner.
Passing on ecological rucksacks
CO2Realtime is a software program and methodology for calculating all greenhouse gas emissions along the production line in real time. It records all material, energy and emission flows. Linking up the production systems makes it possible to automatically transfer the ecological rucksacks, or the total resources used, for each individual step onward to the end product. The project drew heavily on the refined performance indicator-based methodology developed by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMU) and Ökotec in combination with the latter’s software solution EnEffCo.
Companies can use the performance indicators from CO2Realtime to more easily identify potential for boosting efficiency and cutting costs. They can implement targeted changes in the production line and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Building on the results of the project, Ökotec is now seeking to launch an expansion to the software product EnEffCo.
